Naltrexone Implant

A naltrexone implant is a small device placed under the skin that slowly releases naltrexone over several months. Naltrexone is an opioid antagonist, meaning it blocks opioid receptors in the brain. By doing so, it eliminates the euphoric effects of opioids and reduces cravings, helping patients maintain sobriety during recovery. Unlike oral naltrexone, which requires daily compliance, the implant provides continuous medication delivery for an extended period, typically lasting several months. This removes the daily decision-making burden and significantly reduces the risk of relapse due to missed doses. The implant procedure is performed in-office under local anesthesia. A small incision is made, usually in the lower abdomen, and the implant is placed just beneath the skin. The procedure takes approximately 15 to 20 minutes, and patients can return to normal activities shortly afterward. At Spinal Interventions, our providers combine naltrexone implant therapy with comprehensive addiction medicine support to give patients the best chance at sustained recovery.
