Procedure
Caudal Epidural Injection
A caudal epidural injection is a type of epidural steroid injection administered through the sacral hiatus, an opening at the base of the spine near the tailbone. This approach allows anti-inflammatory medication to reach the lower lumbar and sacral nerve roots.
Caudal epidurals are particularly useful for patients with lower back pain, sciatica, and pain following lumbar surgery. The caudal approach can be advantageous for patients who have had prior back surgery, as scar tissue may make other epidural approaches more difficult.
Benefits

- Useful for patients with prior back surgery
- Delivers medication to multiple nerve root levels
- Fluoroscopy-guided for accurate placement
- Quick outpatient procedure
- Can provide significant relief from sciatica and low back pain
